have been reading this AWESOME book that really been challenging my thinking. below are some quotes from it...
---
"in the end, i couldn't fault my friend. she just wanted her outside to look the way she hoped to feel inside. i wanted to know why it mattered so much. ... for us, the pursuit of physical beauty was thoroughly disconnected from any notion that the role of beauty may be to point us to God. our bodies had nothing to say in a spiritual conversation disconnected from our embodiment." eve's revenge, lilian calles barger p.13
---
"but getting beyond surface issues requires that we be willing to face our own failures, our aging, and our feelings of lack..." eve's revenge, lilian calles barger p.13
---
"as a way to use the language of the body, excessive dieting seems to prove a woman's ability to control an otherwise uncontrollable life and attain social legitimacy..." eve's revenge, lilian calles barger p.19
---
"because our bodies can be understood only in relationship to the larger community, we want our bodies to leave a better impression than who we feel we are. we want our bodies to reflect who we hope we are..." eve's revenge, lilian calles barger p.21
---
"through participateion in the beauty cult we hope to acquire not only self-actualization but also love." eve's revenge, lilian calles barger p.22
--
to some, the pressure to meet unattainable level of beauty looks like a male instigated backlash against women's social gains -- a punishment for competing in their world." eve's revenge, lilian calles barger p.22
